Week 8: Job Readiness
This week focuses on preparing you for the job market, from planning your career and creating a resume to networking, interviewing, and negotiating offers.
Module 1: Disocvery, Planning and Initiation
Learning Objectives
- Self:
- Discover one-self through self-assessment, discussions with family, friends, and advisors.
- Network:
- List, expand, and reach-out-to people in your social network to gain from their personal experiences in life.
- Initiate and maintain professional relationships to expand your career opportunities.
- Compose an effective outreach message to request an informational interview.
- Plan an informational interview by generating a list of open-ended questions tailored to a specific contact.
- Resume:
- Write a professional resume that passes a 6-second initial review
- Companies:
- Find and apply to jobs through in-person and online methods
- Evaluate legitimacy and identify signs of potential scams.
Assignments
- Submit a personality test result (based on MBTi)
- Submit an ideal career test result (Holland code)
- SUbmit a resume
Module 3: Interviews and Negotiation
Goal: By the end of this module, students will be able to perform effectively in behavioral interviews and negotiate job offers to maximize their value.
Learning Objectives
- Given a behavioral interview question, students will be able to construct a structured response using the STAR (Situation, Task, Action, Result) method.
- Given a hypothetical job offer, students will be able to propose a negotiation strategy that includes at least three non-salary benefits (e.g., PTO, flexibility, professional development).
- Students will be able to formulate meaningful questions to ask an interviewer that demonstrate research and genuine interest in the role.
